GRRM is definitely writing in the correct genre "Fantasy"! I probably finish reading the Songs Of Fire And Ice after the series is complete and in the bargain bin at the local book store.

I bought the first 4 in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series 2 years ago for my nephew. He will be 19 in February and is in college. He will probably be married with children before 5th book comes out and forget 6 & 7. At 64 I probably won't be alive to buy book 6 & 7 for him. And no doubt he'll be a forensic scientist before this thing ends.

The lack of characters in A Feast for Crows was explained by GRRM himself back in the days. Originally, he wanted in one book, what he now delivers in two, namely A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.
As a feast for crows was getting huge, short of humongous, he chose to cut it along the character viewpoints and not along the storyline.
Hence there won't be any plot progress in the timeline in A dance with dragons, but the characters missing from A Feast for Crows will be there. (In particular my personal favorite, Jon Snow!)

I know it's annoying, but authors do have a certain responsibility to their publishers as well; often they have to do book signings, promotings, updating their website etc. But I agree; the focus should be on the writing in this case.

I say stop promoting like book signing and what not till you acctullay finish the series. The fact that you have no problem makeing fans wait for years on end is disheartening. Some of us are at the point of just quitting. You all remember Robert Jorden, he wasn't very old when he got diagnosed and said he would twenty more years...(i rest my case)

Considering the last book was mostly following stories of side or new characters, it's been about a decade since he released anything that furthered the main plot-line of the series. That's a very long time, and any comparisons to Jordan in that sense are inappropriate. As he admits, he's been unable to resolve a major knot in the main plot-line that has prevented him from continuing. Hopefully, if and when the next book is released, he will use it to advance the plot rather than just get something out there, as he did with the last novel.

Hey Janelle,

confused: Do you mean the Torchwood Children of Earth, or Jean M. Auel's Earth's Children series?

Cheers,

Renai

ps I'm not a princess, just impatient :P

What a lot of princess' you all are. The book will be published when it's ready. Anyone would think you were waiting for the next Children of Earth novel.

Personally, I hope he takes his time with it and gets it right. There are so many plot lines and characters that I imagine it's extremely complex for Martin, in his own mind, to tie everything together. Especially if it was originally planned to be a three-part series, which I wasn't aware of.

I thought Neil Gaiman had a good post a while back on what readers should expect from authors, using GRRM as an example: Entitlement Issues. You may have read this before.
