Another vampire romance novelist has accused Stephanie Meyer of plagiarising sections of Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in her Twilight series.

“In this book, Ms Meyer misappropriated both the ideas and in many instances the text from my client’s book, The Nocturne,” law firm Sedgwick, Detert, Moran and Arnold wrote in a letter dated July 13 to Meyer’s publisher Hachette. The firm represents novelist Jordan Scott.

The letter — posted online by celebrity gossip site TMZ — goes on to outline a side by side analysis of selected passages from the two books, ending by requesting Hachette call the law firm to discuss how Meyer intends to “cease and desist from any copyright infringement” and to compensate Jordan Scott.

TMZ reported that a Meyer representative said:

“The claim that ‘Breaking Dawn’ by Stephenie Meyer somehow infringes on an alleged book by someone named Jordan Scott is completely without merit. Neither Stephenie Meyer nor her representatives had any knowledge of this writer or her supposed book prior to this claim.”

Scott’s website states she is also a musician and singer, and started writing when she graduated high school at the early age of 14. She’s currently attending university in the US.

“I wanted to write a character-driven story with characters who seem to “live and breathe” on the pages,” she wrote. “I wrote The Nocturne with the intent of bringing readers into a completely new world of the fantasy and romance genres. And now I have completed it, after more than three years of intense research, character development, writing, rewriting, editing, and writing a little more! I hope you guys enjoy it.”

  1. Will the Blond be showing uis her titties?

  2. I’d like to see the page-by-page analysis they’re referring to. Personally, I don’t have an affection for the Twilight series — never read one book — but in cases like this, it’s often a PR ploy by agent representatives to make a name for their books and their unknown authors. What do you think?

  3. Well, there is the link to the letter http://www.aolcdn.com/tmz_documents/0803_meyer_infringement.pdf, so go on and read it. Quite interesting.

  4. Very interesting. Thanks for the link, Eevee.

  5. I’ve just read the first few passages, but I wouldn’t consider any of it plagiarism. I’ll have to read more of it later.

  6. Ok i only had time to read the first page and a half, I will admit some of it is a little bit a like but its def. not plagiarism.

  7. Headline next week: “Stephanie Meyer claims next novel will contain an original idea”. Don’t hold your breath.

  8. I have been writing stories for a long time but I did it for fun and in my leisure. One I started work on again which was in my computer but not finished. There are no original ideas anymore in the area of vampire stories except maybe background details. I went to see Eclipse, haven’t read her books nor many others. I stopped reading books like that long ago because I didn’t want it to infringe on my own ideas. Doesn’t matter, Stephanie Meyers named one or her characters the same as one of mine and she goes into imprinting which she didn’t invent. It is just how it applies to the stories that are different and others have used that. They will lose because some of these things cannot be avoided. Vampires have a basic form whether they can be in daylight, eat, drink blood or don’t ect. The other girls book, heh. I have a site with the word Nocturne in it. Others have used that as well long before she is trying to take it. What about Harry Potter, that name was used way before Rowling’s books in a movie called Troll. The lady needs to get over it. Doesn’t matter because her story will have a different plot and probably characters and background, so she needs to suck it up. I changed some of the words in mine and moved on.
