What’s next for Kate Elliott?
Prolific science fiction and fantasy author Kate Elliott (also known by her real name, Alis A. Rasmussen) is planning a stand-alone book followed by a trilogy in her Crossroads series and has just finished a draft of a new novel she describes as her ‘Afro-Celtic post-Roman icepunk Regency with bonus! airship and Phoenician spies novel’.
In a new interview over at the Fantasy Book Critic blog, Elliott discusses the genesis of Traitors’ Gate, the third book in Crossroads, which will be out shortly, as well as the next step for the series and what appears to be her side project, a book entitled Cold Magic:
Cold Magic is planned as the first of a trilogy. I don’t yet have the signed contracts for that deal so prefer not to discuss it in any detail. However, I note that Mark Charan Newton and Stephen Hunt are also practitioners of the icepunk subgenre, which refers to fantasy (or sf) with some sort of Ice Age connection, however obscure that connection might be (icepunk, like advancing glacial ice, likes to crush everything in its path, which makes it an inclusive rather than an exclusive sub-genre). I’ll post more about it when I can.
Fantasy Book Critic review Mihir Wanchoo overall seems pleased with Traitors’ Gate, although she says it has some minor drawbacks, Elliott appears to have penned the book quite quickly, as the previous two books in the series, Spirit Gate and Shadow Gate, were published in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
